  This conference on desalination for the environment will be devoted to advances towards providing fresh water for all, at affordable cost and at economical energy requirements.

• Mission in Rabat (Morocco, 3rd February 2009) ( 02/03/2009 - 02/04/2009 ) Rabat , Morocco

  The European project MED CSD, which started in June 2008, aims at carrying out feasibility studies of CSP plants producing both electricity and desalinated water. Those feasibility studies include a technical part and an economic and financial part.

   

  In October 2008, a first mission was done by EDF and meetings were held in Rabat and Casablanca with the Moroccan partners, ONEP, CDER and ONE to discuss the possible strategies for the project. As an outcome of this first meeting, ONEP identified a possible site in Tan-Tan for a CSP plant (15 MWe) combined with a desalination unit and proposed this project to the Mediterranean Solar Plan.

   

  A second mission took place in Rabat on the 3rd of February 2009. DLR, KERNENERGIEN, INVEN and EDF met ONEP, CDER and ONE with the following objectives :
  • Finalize the site selection
  • Discuss the technology options for the project
  • Prepare the economic evaluation of the project

• Kick off meeting at EDF (Clamart, 5th & 6th June 2008) ( 06/05/2008 - 06/06/2008 ) EDF - Clamart - France

  The MED‐CSD project is carried out under the European Commission FP7. The duration, of the project is 2 years, from 1st June 2008 to 31st May 2010.

   

  The main objectives of the MED‐CSD project are to:
  ‐ Carry out feasibility studies of hybrid power plants combining Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) technology with seawater desalination in the Mediterranean regionin Algeria, Egypt, Italy (Island), Morocco, PNA
  ‐ Assess the technico‐economic potential of this type of combined generation (electricity and desalinated water) in the region
  ‐ Take benefits from the results of past and on‐going studies and projects (Aqaba Solar Water Project as a reference, REMAP project …)
  ‐ Make an impact assessment for a broad dissemination of this concept in the MPCs

   

  The objectives of this kick‐off meeting are to:
  ‐ Present of all the partners of the consortium
  ‐ Present the key elements of the MED‐CSD project (state of art, situation in the countries, perspectives…)
  ‐ Have the first discussion concerning the different orientations of the work packages
